At least 35 people were killed and 43 others injured on Monday when a driver plowed into a crowd outside the running track at Zhuhai Sports Centre in Guangdong province, near Macau, in southeastern China.
Social media footage showed dozens of victims, many dressed in exercise clothes, lying motionless on the ground. According to local police, “a passenger car struck several pedestrians at the sports centre in Xiangzhou District of Zhuhai City and then fled the scene.”
Witnesses reported that many of the victims were middle-aged and elderly individuals who were exercising on the track at the time. The area was later cordoned off by authorities for investigation.
A 62-year-old man, identified as Fan, has been arrested in connection with the incident. The authorities have not yet clarified whether the event was an intentional attack or a tragic accident. In the aftermath, the sports centre, originally built for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, has suspended all activities. A statement online indicated that a reopening date is yet to be determined.
Fatal traffic incidents are unfortunately common in China, often attributed to insufficient safety protocols.
