64th Independence: I Won’t Yield to Blackmail – Governor Fubara
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has firmly stated that his administration will not succumb to any form of blackmail, whether from individuals or groups. He emphasized that his primary focus remains on providing good governance and advancing the progress of the state.
Fubara made this declaration on Tuesday during the 64th Nigerian Independence Day Anniversary Parade at the Government House Arcade in Port Harcourt. He reiterated his commitment to strengthening peace, governance, and economic development in the state.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, the governor also expressed appreciation for President Bola Tinubu’s “bold and pragmatic” economic reforms, which he believes will address Nigeria’s structural issues and foster sustainable growth.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s independence journey, Fubara said, “October 1st, 1960, is a date forever etched in our history, when Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, raised our beloved green-white-green flag, symbolizing our freedom from British colonial rule. Since then, numerous leaders have sacrificed to safeguard our freedom and unity.”
While acknowledging the efforts of both past and present leaders in keeping the country unified, Fubara lamented that, even after 64 years of independence, Nigeria still faces significant challenges such as insecurity and economic hardship.
“Despite these challenges, there is still cause for celebration. Globally, Nigerians are recognized for their resilience, cultural richness, and resourcefulness. We must remain thankful for what we have and strive to create a country where no one is oppressed and everyone can live in peace and prosperity,” he added.
Fubara urged Nigerians to uphold the vision of the nation’s founding fathers by promoting unity, peace, and justice. He called for closer collaboration between citizens and the federal government to address pressing issues such as corruption, nepotism, and insecurity.
He emphasized, “Only through our collective efforts can Nigeria realize its full potential and emerge as a global leader.”
The governor also praised President Tinubu for his commitment to driving economic reforms and urged fellow governors to enhance efforts in combating insecurity, banditry, and oil theft, particularly in the Niger Delta, for these reforms to succeed.
Fubara reassured the people of Rivers State that his administration remains committed to improving infrastructure, education, and healthcare. He highlighted key projects such as the Port Harcourt Ring Road, the Trans-Kalabari Road, and the ongoing rehabilitation of schools, hospitals, and the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.
In addition, the governor commended the Armed Forces, Police, and other security agencies for maintaining peace and security in Rivers State, pledging continued support for their efforts.
