Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman of the Nigerians In Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), has taken to her official X account on Monday to respond after Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, declared that the team would not play their match against Libya due to poor treatment from the Libyan authorities.
Troost-Ekong announced that the team had made the decision to boycott the match as a result of the conditions they faced in Libya. He stated, “At this point, we have called on the Nigerian Government to intervene and rescue us. As captain, along with the team, we’ve decided not to play this game. CAF should review the situation. Even if they award the points to Libya, we refuse to travel by road here, even with security, as it is not safe.”
In response, Abike Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that the safety of the Super Eagles players is a top priority. She noted that Libya remains unsafe, especially for road travel, due to the impact of past conflicts and the current security situation.
She posted, “My attention has been drawn to the appalling treatment our Super Eagles players are facing in Libya. Their safety is our utmost concern. Libya is not a safe place for unplanned travel, particularly by road, given the aftermath of war and the current state of the country. I am confident the Sports Ministry and NFF will make the appropriate decisions.”
