Human rights activist Comrade Deji Adeyanju has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to deploy the Nigerian Army to support the Navy in safeguarding the nation’s oil facilities from theft.
In an open letter to the President on Monday, Adeyanju praised the recent rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries while highlighting the need for stronger security measures to prevent oil theft.
“It is evident that the Nigerian Navy is overstretched and cannot single-handedly protect our oil facilities. Therefore, I urge the President to direct the army to enhance security across these facilities and curb oil theft,” Adeyanju stated.
The activist also emphasized the importance of fulfilling campaign promises by improving the living conditions of average Nigerians. “While commending Mr. President for the strides made with the refineries, I appeal for urgent measures to improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians,” he added.
Adeyanju referred to the recent rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, noting that the Port Harcourt refinery has resumed production of petroleum products.
“After personally verifying the reports, I feel compelled to commend President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to restoring the functionality of these refineries,” he remarked.
At a time when Nigerians are burdened by the rising cost of petroleum products, Adeyanju expressed optimism that the operational refineries would foster competition and drive down prices across the country.
He concluded by urging President Tinubu to take additional steps to block illegal exploitation of the country’s oil resources by non-state actors, ensuring the nation’s oil wealth benefits all citizens.
