The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, alongside former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, have lauded prominent legal figure Aare Afe Babalola (SAN) for agreeing to withdraw the defamation suits he filed against human rights advocate and lawyer, Dele Farotimi.
Afenifere and Obi shared their appreciation during separate interviews with The PUNCH on Monday.
The legal conflict between Babalola and Farotimi began in 2024 after Babalola accused Farotimi of defaming him in his book ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.’ Following the complaint, Farotimi was arrested by the police and faced charges in two courts in Ekiti State.
Farotimi was charged with criminal defamation in the Ekiti State Magistrates’ Court and accused of cyberbullying in the Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti. He was detained for 20 days before being granted bail on December 24, 2024.
However, on Monday morning, Babalola announced that he would be withdrawing the lawsuits, following interventions from Yoruba monarchs, led by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi. “I will instruct my lawyers to withdraw the case,” Babalola said after a midnight meeting with traditional leaders at the Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD).
Afenifere, which had previously advocated for Farotimi’s release, issued a statement through its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, praising Babalola’s decision as a gesture of peace.
In the statement, Afenifere remarked that Babalola, by respecting the appeal of the traditional rulers, “has exemplified the core Yoruba values of an Omoluabi.” The group further lauded the Ooni and other monarchs for their bold actions, referencing the Yoruba adage “Agba kii wa loja, ki ori omo titun wo,” which emphasizes the importance of elders stepping in during times of conflict.
Former presidential candidate Obi also expressed his approval, with his spokesperson Ibrahim Umar noting that the resolution of the matter reflected the power of dialogue and constructive engagement. Obi clarified that his previous visit to Babalola was not to seek pardon for Farotimi but rather to mediate and facilitate peace between the parties involved.
