Chief Michael Nwobu, an 83-year-old community leader from Umudioka village, Awka, was brutally murdered in his residence at 27 Okolobu Street, Anambra State, by unidentified assailants.
The attack occurred last Sunday while his family members were away at church, allowing the perpetrators to gain access to the house undetected.
His first son, Mr. Nnaemeka Nwobu, who resides in South Korea, confirmed the tragic incident. “I received a call on Sunday informing me that my father, Chief Michael Nwobu, had been murdered. He was supposed to appear as a witness in a High Court case in Awka on March 5, 2025, concerning a land dispute between Mr. Patrick Nwobu and Mr. Nnamdi Nnaemeka, but he was killed on March 2.”
Revealing gruesome details, he added, “I was told he was stabbed multiple times. I believe cultists were hired to kill him. The attackers nearly severed his head. The Nigeria Police Command in Awka is still investigating the circumstances of his murder, but there have been no updates yet.”
Expressing his grief, he stated, “I am devastated by the way my father was killed. I can’t imagine his struggle to survive during the attack. I demand justice from the police and the government for this brutal act. My late father, Chief Michael Chinweze Nnaemeka Nwobu, stood for justice. May God help us.”
Another of the victim’s sons, Nnaemeka Kene Joseph, submitted a statement to the police, alleging possible involvement of family members. “I strongly suspect some relatives due to the legal dispute he had with them. There were threats to remove him from his leadership position within the family before his murder. I also suspect some tenants who were present in the house when the incident occurred.”
Authorities have yet to make any official statements regarding the investigation.
