An enraged mob in Onitsha, Anambra State, reportedly set two revenue collectors ablaze on Venn Road near Egerton Bus Stop after a tragic incident involving a tipper driver led to the death of a bystander.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when six revenue agents were allegedly chasing a tipper driver over an unpaid fee. In an attempt to stop the driver, some of the agents reportedly grabbed the vehicle’s steering wheel, causing the driver to lose control and crash into a pedestrian. The pedestrian, described by locals as a well-known figure in the area, died on the spot.
Outraged by the incident, residents reportedly attacked the revenue collectors, setting two of them on fire while the remaining four managed to escape.
One witness told “PUNCH”, “The revenue agents caused this accident while chasing the driver for payment. When the vehicle hit and killed someone, the mob took matters into their own hands, burning two of the collectors alive. This has been happening too often in Anambra over the past two years.”
Another local lamented the recurring violence allegedly linked to revenue collection activities, stating, “These agents have caused more harm to Ndi Anambra than many other issues combined. This must stop.”
Confirming the incident, Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said law enforcement responded quickly to the fatal accident.
“We are collaborating with the relevant authorities to investigate the incident and address such occurrences in the future,” Ikenga stated.
The community continues to express frustration over the aggressive tactics employed by revenue agents, calling for reforms to prevent further tragedies.
