The All Progressives Congress (APC) has sharply criticized former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, accusing him of misrepresenting the current state of the country’s security and economy.
At a recent press conference, Obi rejected President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s claims in his New Year address, where the President highlighted the achievements of his administration. Obi argued that the country’s political, economic, and security conditions have deteriorated under Tinubu’s leadership.
In response, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka described Obi’s remarks as biased and misleading, aimed at gaining political advantage. Morka refuted Obi’s claims, emphasizing that they contradicted data showing a significant recovery in the nation’s economy across various sectors.
Morka further stated: “While Nigerians welcomed 2025 with optimism, Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate, seems stuck in a cycle of doom-laden rhetoric, claiming daily deterioration in the country’s conditions. This is not only misleading but serves as an attempt to score cheap political points.”
According to Morka, Obi’s statement stands in stark contrast to positive indicators of progress under the current administration. He highlighted that the economy has seen steady growth over the past 18 months, listing achievements such as:
- Surpluses in balance of trade
- Significant stock market wealth creation
- A surge in foreign direct investment due to growing confidence in the economy
- Increased foreign reserves
- A reduction in debt servicing from 90% to about 64%
- Higher incomes for farmers and increased allocations to states and local governments
- Efforts to curb financial leakages and improve national revenue
- Revitalization of the Port-Harcourt and Warri refineries
- Boosted oil production and export of petroleum products
- Successes in combating terrorism and improving security
- Numerous initiatives aimed at meeting the administration’s $1 trillion economy target
Despite these improvements, the APC stressed that the administration is intensifying its efforts to ensure these reforms lead to long-term growth and transformation.
The APC also noted that President Tinubu, in his New Year message, acknowledged the ongoing challenge of high food and drug prices and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to reducing food costs through increased local production. Additionally, Tinubu set a target to lower the inflation rate from 34% to 15% in the upcoming fiscal year.
The party further commented on the administration’s strong stance on fighting corruption, highlighting ongoing investigations and trials of prominent Nigerians. Morka criticized Obi for offering critiques on corruption, pointing out that his record as Governor of Anambra State was devoid of significant achievements or reforms.
The APC concluded by accusing Obi and his allies in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of trying to incite public outrage due to their realization that President Tinubu’s reforms are positioning him for long-term political success. They called for continued support and patience from Nigerians, assuring them that under the Renewed Hope Agenda (RHA), Tinubu is laying a solid foundation for a prosperous future.
