A group of armed robbers who intercepted 13 bishops of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star during an Episcopal tour across Nigerian states reportedly requested prayers from the clergymen to avoid being caught.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening along a federal highway in Benue State, as the bishops were heading toward Abuja, according to Archbishop Benjamin Ogwutum, the leader of the group.
Recounting the ordeal to journalists, Archbishop Ogwutum explained that the group had planned to spend the night in Abuja, which led them to continue their journey through the evening.
“As we passed through the North Bank area of Benue State, we encountered men who initially appeared to be Fulani herdsmen. They were conducting an operation on the highway,” Ogwutum stated. “They stopped our vehicle, and in fear, we called on the name of the Father. Upon hearing that, one of them, likely their leader, approached us and said, ‘Let them go, they are people of God. We have no business with you.’”
The leader then confessed to the bishops that they were indeed armed robbers but asked for their prayers to avoid getting caught by authorities.
