Liverpool manager Arne Slot has cautioned against celebrating too early despite his team’s dominant position in the Premier League. The Reds moved seven points clear at the top after a 3-1 win over Leicester City on Boxing Day, with goals from Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones, and Mohamed Salah. The victory followed second-placed Chelsea’s loss to Fulham, widening the gap between the teams.
Slot, however, pointed to Manchester City’s struggles as a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in football. The defending champions have managed just one win in their last 12 matches across all competitions and currently sit 14 points behind Liverpool after a 1-1 draw with Everton.
Speaking in the post-match press conference, Slot dismissed claims that Liverpool are cruising toward the title, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of the league.
Slot: “Anything Can Happen”
“If you’re in this game for a long time, you know that 20 games before the end, you can’t look at it as your title to lose,” Slot said. “Two months ago, we were one point behind City, and now look at what’s happened there—injuries, bad luck, suspensions. This can happen to any team.”
Slot also highlighted the absence of “easy wins” in the league, referencing Liverpool’s dramatic 5-3 victory over Tottenham as proof of the challenges his team faces, even when in control.
“It’s important to stay focused and take it one game at a time,” he added. “The table looks good, but there’s still a long way to go.”
Salah: “Stay Humble”
Mohamed Salah echoed Slot’s sentiments, urging his teammates to remain grounded despite their lead.
“It feels different this time, but the key is staying humble,” Salah told Amazon Prime. “We’ve been ahead before and lost it due to injuries. Hopefully, we can keep everyone fit and go on to win it. Winning the Premier League for this club is something I dream of.”
Title Race Dynamics
Liverpool’s lead could narrow to six points if Arsenal win their upcoming game against Ipswich Town on Friday. However, Liverpool also hold a game in hand, providing them with an additional cushion.
While optimism grows among fans, Slot remains wary of the potential for injuries or suspensions to derail their season, pointing to City’s plight as a cautionary tale.
With more than half the season still to play, Slot and Salah’s measured approach underscores the challenges of maintaining form in one of the most competitive leagues in the world.
