Nigerians on social media have heavily criticized popular content creator Kuye Adegoke, known as Egungun of Lagos, after a private video of his surfaced online.
The video, which has been widely shared, shows Egungun brushing his teeth during a video call with an unidentified woman. In the clip, he appears in shorts and allegedly exposed himself to the woman during the call.
Prior to the video leak, Egungun’s wife, Pashotah, addressed a blackmail attempt involving her husband’s private recordings. On Sunday, she took to Instagram to defend him, writing:
“Hi guys, someone is blackmailing me with my husband’s videos. My name is Pashotah, and you all know who my husband is. Obviously, I know many people have tried to bring both of us down, including guys and girls. I always choose to ignore, but not today. The blackmailer didn’t go to Egungun directly but came to me instead, with the aim of shaming me, as his messages suggest.”
“What he doesn’t realize is that this relationship, built over 6–8 years when we had nothing, stands on trust, understanding, loyalty, and commitment. Nothing can bring us down, not even now.”
Despite her defense, the incident has triggered a wave of reactions online. Many questioned Egungun’s previous image as a family man, while others debated whether the video was a misunderstanding or an old clip meant to tarnish his reputation.
On X (formerly Twitter), a user identified as Dr. Penking commented: “Egungun’s wife watched that video and still came out to defend him? I thought Nigerian women now knew their worth. Where was she when that decision was made?”
Another user, Peace Ighodaro, remarked: “Egungun’s wife is the perfect example of an understanding partner.”
On Facebook, a user with the handle Billzcollecshun criticized her stance, saying: “Women supporting men at their lowest. She must have resigned from their association overnight.”
Some supported her decision, with Mercy Akuma stating: “Egungun’s wife has every right to stand by her man, no matter what. It’s her choice.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Afowose on X wrote: “So she should leave him and go where? To another man who might cheat and love her less? A man cheating and a woman cheating are not the same, and women often prefer a loving cheater over a broke man.”
Another commenter, Chance Da Mayor, added: “Why do you want her to leave her husband? Her place is with him. Forget the blackmailer issue; I respect her defense.”
Others, however, felt her response was misguided. Jimmy01 opined: “She’s probably hurting deeply but is putting up a defensive front. Her husband’s private video is out there for everyone to see—unacceptable.”
David Isemin suggested a different approach, saying: “Silence would have been the better damage control in this situation.”
As of now, Egungun of Lagos has not publicly addressed the controversy, and his wife has refrained from making any further statements.
