United States President Joe Biden is set to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 19 notable figures on Saturday, celebrating their exceptional contributions to the country and the world.
This year’s honorees include global icons across various fields. Argentine football legend Lionel Messi, celebrated actor Denzel Washington, and basketball superstar Earvin “Magic” Johnson are among the recipients. Joining them are singer and activist Bono, Parkinson’s advocate and actor Michael J. Fox, fashion mogul Anna Wintour, and designer Ralph Lauren.
“The honorees are great leaders because they are good people who have made extraordinary contributions to their country and the world,” the White House stated.
Environmentalist Jane Goodall, renowned chef José Andrés, and Hillary Clinton, the former US Secretary of State, are also on the list. Clinton was recognized for her groundbreaking public service, including her historic run as the first woman nominated for the US presidency by a major party.
Biden also posthumously awarded the Medal of Freedom to Robert F. Kennedy, the late US Attorney General, praising his enduring legacy of justice and equality.
Billionaire philanthropist George Soros will be honored for his global advocacy for democracy and social justice.
The awards reflect Biden’s efforts to highlight cultural and political figures who have significantly shaped society during his presidency.
On Thursday, Biden also presented the Presidential Citizens Medal to former Congresswoman Liz Cheney for her role in the investigation of the January 6 Capitol insurrection, sparking criticism from Donald Trump, who labeled Cheney as “totally corrupt.”
With this year’s recipients, Biden underscores his commitment to celebrating leadership that transcends politics and inspires progress on a global scale.
