Boko Haram has reportedly launched multiple attacks against the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in northern Borno State, resulting in significant casualties and the dislodgement of several ISWAP camps. The strikes, which took place between December 23 and 24, led to the death of numerous ISWAP fighters and the capture of valuable equipment, including 20 motorcycles.
The attacks targeted known ISWAP strongholds, including Toumbun Gini, Mangari, Toumbun Saje, and Metele, where Boko Haram militants overpowered their ISWAP counterparts. Eyewitnesses reported that ISWAP militants fled the scene in disarray, abandoning their camps and escaping without shoes and with only the clothes on their backs.
Sources indicate that ISWAP is likely to avoid direct confrontations with Boko Haram in the immediate future, opting instead to focus on rebuilding its strength. Despite this, concerns are growing over Boko Haram’s increasing influence in the northern Borno region.
This follows an August clash in the Lake Chad region, where over 100 Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters were reportedly killed.
