Tension engulfed Okpare-Olomu town in the Olomu Kingdom of Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State, on Thursday morning as Nigerian military personnel stormed the community in three Hilux vehicles, taking control of the town hall.
The incident, which occurred around 7:30 a.m., has left residents panicked, with women and children fleeing to safety to avoid any potential violence. The military’s sudden presence reportedly sparked fears of a repeat of previous incidents in neighboring communities.
SaharaReporters revealed that the military operation was aimed at locating certain community leaders, including the President-General, Okiemute Otoka.
Otoka alleged that the military’s arrival was a calculated move to disrupt the community’s annual conference, a key event where developmental decisions are made. He accused some community elders of orchestrating the invasion in retaliation for accusations of unlawfully selling communal land without proper approval.
“Their aim was to disrupt our annual conference, which is critical for the growth and development of our community. This invasion is not a coincidence but a deliberate interference in our affairs,” Otoka claimed.
As of the time of reporting, the military personnel remained stationed in the community, heightening fears among residents who continue to express concerns over the intent and duration of the occupation.
Efforts to obtain a statement from military authorities regarding the operation were unsuccessful, leaving the true purpose of the invasion unclear. The incident has raised questions about the relationship between local communities and the military, with many calling for an immediate resolution to prevent further unrest.
