Chijioke Ihunwo, the Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area (LGA), has removed the name of former Governor Nyesom Wike from the administrative block of the council secretariat. This move is the latest in the ongoing power tussle between Wike and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
The two political figures have been at odds over control of the state’s political structures. Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is from Rumuepirikom in Obio-Akpor LGA, and his name had previously been displayed on the council’s administrative block.
As of Sunday morning, Wike’s name was replaced with that of Obi Wali, a renowned Rivers State politician and activist who died in 1993. Videos of the removal were shared by Ihunwo on X (formerly Twitter).
This development comes after Fubara’s loyalists joined the Action Peoples Party (APP) ahead of the recent LGA elections, where the APP secured 22 out of 23 chairmanship seats.
