Nigerian musician Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington or AKPI, has been arrested by the Nigerian police during a show in Owerri, Imo State. The arrest was confirmed by his lawyer, human rights advocate Deji Adeyanju, who shared the news on his official Facebook page.
“Our client Speed Darlington a.k.a. AKPI has been arrested by the Nigerian police in Owerri at his show upon his return to Nigeria,” Adeyanju wrote.
Details surrounding the arrest remain unclear, but this follows a recent report by SaharaReporters alleging that Speed Darlington had previously been detained over accusations of cyberstalking fellow musician Damini Ogulu, better known as Burna Boy.
In that earlier case, Darlington was reportedly arrested in Lagos and transferred to Abuja, where he was held at the Intelligence Response Team’s detention center in Guzape. Adeyanju, who had visited him at the time, disclosed that the arrest stemmed from a petition filed by Burna Boy.
Adeyanju has criticized the case, describing the petition as lacking substance. “I have met with Speed Darlington, and he’s in good spirits. We are working to secure his release on bail as soon as possible,” he said.
He also noted that while police investigating the case had allowed him to review the petition’s content, they declined to provide him with a copy.
It remains to be seen whether the latest arrest in Owerri is related to the earlier accusations or involves separate allegations. Fans of Speed Darlington await further updates on his legal situation.
