The Nigerian Muslim community is in mourning following the death of revered Islamic scholar, Alhaji Muyideen Ajani Bello.
Born in 1940 in Ibadan, Oyo State, Bello was a distinguished preacher and a beacon of Islamic knowledge, admired for his eloquence and dedication to the faith. His death at the age of 84 was confirmed on Friday morning by Alfa Aribidesi of At-Tawdeeh Islamic Da’awah, another respected Islamic scholar.
In a heartfelt tribute, Alhaji Basit Olanrewaju, popularly known as Aponle Anabi, shared a photo of the late scholar with tearful emojis on his official Facebook page. Sheikh Taofeeq Akeugbagold also expressed his grief, describing Bello as a mentor and father figure. “Our hearts are full of grief, and our eyes are full of tears, but we submit to Allah’s will,” Akeugbagold wrote.
A Life Dedicated to Knowledge and Truth
Alhaji Bello’s contributions to Islamic scholarship were monumental. His passion for learning began in childhood, studying under his father and later his uncle, an Islamic scholar in Ibadan. A celebrated public speaker from the age of 10, Bello became known for his fearless sermons, emphasizing the importance of truth and unwavering faith.
In addition to his religious studies, Bello pursued formal education, earning a National Certificate of Education (NCE) and briefly working in electronics. He believed in the value of both spiritual and secular knowledge, saying, “Even at that time, I knew I would one day become an Islamic cleric. But I also wanted to ensure I had a job to sustain me.”

Since the news of his passing broke, mourners have gathered at Bello’s Akobo residence in Ibadan to console his family and pay their respects. Videos from the scene capture a mix of sorrow and gratitude, with many reflecting on the profound impact of his teachings on peace, unity, and spiritual enlightenment.
