President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has granted approval for the development of Inland Dry Ports (IDPs) in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, and Moniya, Oyo State. This strategic move is aimed at easing the congestion at Lagos seaports, addressing long-standing delays, and boosting Nigeria’s economic growth. Upon completion, the IDPs will create numerous job opportunities, especially for the youth in these states and across the western region.
In a briefing to the Joint Committee of the Senate on Marine Transport and the House of Representatives Committees on Ports and Maritime Safety, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, emphasized the urgency of delivering these ports quickly. The design process is already underway, he added.
Oyetola also addressed critical challenges within the maritime sector, such as the deteriorating infrastructure, silted waterways, inadequate fish production, and the lack of efficient river crafts. The Ministry, he stated, is launching multiple initiatives to improve these areas.
The Minister further highlighted the Federal Government’s commitment to consolidating its achievements, particularly in port infrastructure, fisheries, maritime safety, security, and revenue generation. This effort is part of the broader focus on advancing the blue economy.
