Wayne Rooney has been sacked as manager of Plymouth Argyle after a disappointing run that left the club at the bottom of the Championship table. The former England and Manchester United captain was appointed over the summer but was unable to turn the team’s fortunes around, with only five wins from 25 matches in all competitions.
Plymouth announced that the club and Rooney had “mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect.” Alongside Rooney, Assistant Head Coach Mike Phelan and First Team Coach Simon Ireland also departed the club.
A statement from the club read: “We would like to thank Wayne and his team for all their efforts and wish them well for the future.” Rooney expressed his gratitude for his time at the club, thanking the board, staff, players, and fans for their support. “Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart,” he said.
Rooney’s tenure at Plymouth marks the end of his third stint managing in the English second-tier, following previous roles at Derby County and Birmingham City. However, his managerial career has suffered setbacks, with a disappointing 15-game spell at Birmingham that ended in his sacking last season.
Living in a rented flat in Plymouth since his appointment, Rooney’s lifestyle away from his family in Cheshire has reportedly raised concerns. His wife Coleen, who spent time in the “I’m A Celeb” jungle recently, has expressed worries about his “bachelor lifestyle” in Devon. Rooney has been seen enjoying nights out in local bars, where he’s often spotted socializing, including singing Ed Sheeran songs at karaoke nights.
His sacking will be a blow to his managerial ambitions, as he had hoped to rebuild his career after a tough spell at Birmingham.
