The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has crowned Nigerian football star and Atalanta striker, Ademola Lookman, as the 2024 African Best Male Player.
The announcement was made during the award ceremony held on Monday night, streamed live on CAF’s official YouTube page.
This year, five players were shortlisted for the prestigious title. Notably, last year’s winner Victor Osimhen and 2022 recipient Mohamed Salah were absent from the final list, ensuring a new winner emerged. The nominees included Simon Adingra (Ivory Coast/Brighton), Serhou Guirassy (Guinea/Borussia Dortmund), Achraf Hakimi (Morocco/PSG), Ademola Lookman (Nigeria/Atalanta), and Ronwen Williams (South Africa/Mamelodi Sundowns). Lookman ultimately stood out as the continent’s best performer.
In addition to Lookman’s triumph, another Nigerian star, Chiamaka Nnadozie, was honored as the Africa Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year. Furthermore, the Nigerian Super Falcons were named the Women’s Football Team of the Year by CAF.
Earlier in October, Ademola Lookman also achieved a significant milestone, ranking 14th in the 2024 Ballon d’Or standings. This announcement, made in Paris, marked Lookman’s first-ever nomination for the prestigious global award.
The 27-year-old forward has enjoyed a stellar year, delivering standout performances for both club and country. Playing in Serie A for Atalanta, Lookman’s consistent excellence has solidified his position as one of Africa’s top footballing talents in 2024.
