A violent altercation on Christmas Day at Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix, Arizona, left four people injured, including three gunshot victims and one stabbing victim. The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. at a restaurant outside the security checkpoints in Terminal 4, APNews reports.
Phoenix police have confirmed that the victims, an adult female and two adult males, were all known to each other. The female suffered life-threatening injuries, while the two males are in stable condition. Another man, hospitalized with a stab wound, is also reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities believe the altercation stemmed from a family dispute that escalated into violence. “I do believe that this was a family dispute that escalated,” Phoenix Police Sergeant Mayra Reeson stated during a press briefing.
Following the shooting, a man and a girl were detained in a nearby parking garage. Police are investigating their involvement, the motive behind the incident, and the group’s presence at the airport, including whether they were traveling or there for other reasons.
The gunfire temporarily disrupted operations at Terminal 4, leading to the closure of a security checkpoint and a pause in the terminal’s PHX Sky Train service.
“This was scary,” Reeson added. “This was Christmas evening, and everybody’s trying to get home.”
The investigation remains ongoing, with police yet to disclose any charges or additional details.
