Retired Colonel Bello Fadile’s new book, Nine Lives: The Bello Fadile Memoirs, has been celebrated as an inspiring account of survival, resilience, and service to Nigeria. The memoir recounts Fadile’s extraordinary journey as a military officer, legal expert, and patriot, overcoming significant challenges, including a death sentence under General Sani Abacha’s regime.
During the book’s public presentation on November 18, 2024, at the Shehu Yar’Adua Center in Abuja, prominent figures such as General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Chair of the event), Aisha Babangida (representing General Ibrahim Babangida), former Senate President David Mark, and John Cardinal Onaiyekan commended Fadile’s courage and contributions to Nigeria’s development.
A Story of Triumph Over Adversity
The memoir, structured into five chapters, provides a vivid narrative of Fadile’s life, from his early struggles to groundbreaking achievements. Notably, he became Nigeria’s first military-trained lawyer with a PhD in International Law and served as the inaugural legal officer in the Nigerian Army. The book also sheds light on his unjust imprisonment during Abacha’s regime and eventual freedom with the return of democracy in 1999.
Fadile’s resilience and commitment to justice have been praised as a source of inspiration. Prof. Agbo Madaki described Nine Lives as essential reading for students of history and governance, emphasizing its lessons on resilience, democracy, and accountability.
Calls for Institutional Reforms
Prince Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, used the occasion to advocate for rebuilding critical institutions in Nigeria, including the military, judiciary, and civil service. Linking institutional decay to national insecurity, he emphasized professionalism and discipline as the foundation for national progress.
To inspire future leaders, Adebayo announced the donation of 1,000 copies of the memoir to military schools and institutions.
Reflections and Gratitude
In his remarks, Col. Fadile expressed gratitude to the dignitaries and attendees, describing the memoir as a platform for dialogue and healing. He invited fellow advocates of democracy to share their perspectives and enrich the historical narrative presented in the book.
Fadile remarked, “This memoir will clarify issues for many and foster dialogue. From such discussions, healing occurs, and we collectively embrace the light of mutual understanding.”
A Beacon of Hope for Nigeria
Speakers at the event urged Nigerian youth to draw inspiration from Fadile’s life, emphasizing patriotism, courage, and resilience as essential traits for nation-building. General Abdulsalami Abubakar highlighted the military’s role as a stabilizing force and encouraged the younger generation to uphold democratic ideals.
Nine Lives is more than a personal story; it is a call to action for a more united and progressive Nigeria. Fadile’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that determination, faith, and patriotism can overcome even the most daunting challenges.
As Nigeria faces complex national issues, Fadile’s memoir offers a roadmap for leadership, institutional reform, and hope for a brighter future.
