Two Nollywood films, Jagun Jagun and The Weekend, took home multiple honors at the 20th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), held on November 2, 2024, at the Balmoral Convention Centre in Lagos. The event, celebrating African cinema’s achievements since 2005, was hosted by Nollywood veteran Segun Arinze and Ghanaian actress and presenter Joselyn Dumas.
The Weekend, directed by Daniel Oriahi, was among the night’s top winners, earning the Best Film award along with accolades for its cinematography. The cast includes Keppy Ekpenyong-Bassey, Uzoamaka Aniunoh, and Gloria Anozie.
Meanwhile, Jagun Jagun saw Femi Adebayo win Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Directed by Adebayo Tijani and Tope Adebayo, this action-packed film features a cast of notable Yoruba film stars, including Lateef Adedimeji, Faithia Williams, Odunlade Adekola, and Ibrahim Yekini.
This year, a 12-member jury, chaired by Dorothee Wenner and including Lagos’s former Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Steve Ayorinde, reviewed entries across numerous categories. Here’s a rundown of the main winners:

Additional recognitions included a Lifetime Achievement Award for filmmakers Souleymane Cisse (Mali), Nacer Khemir (Tunisia), and Haile Gerima (Ethiopia). Alain Gomis (Senegal/Gabon) and Zimbabwean author Tsitsi Dangarembga also received Special Recognition.
This year’s AMAA celebrated the best in African storytelling, showcasing outstanding talent and creativity across the continent.
