Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jay-Z face accusations in a civil lawsuit of raping a 13-year-old girl during an afterparty for the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. The victim alleges that Combs made unsettling comments before the incident that remain with her to this day.
An amended civil complaint, reviewed by PEOPLE, details the accusations made by a woman referred to as Jane Doe. She alleges that both Combs, now 55, and Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, also 55, raped her during the party at a private residence in New York City. The original lawsuit, filed in October, did not mention Jay-Z by name.
The lawsuit claims that the plaintiff was invited to the afterparty by a limousine driver who suggested she was the type of girl that Combs preferred. She had reportedly been trying to gain access to the VMAs by approaching limousines outside Radio City Music Hall.
The 13-year-old alleges that upon arrival, she was asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement and was later given a drink that she suspects was laced with drugs.
According to the complaint, Combs approached her with what she described as a “crazed look” and allegedly exclaimed, “You are ready to party!”
The plaintiff claims that Combs then pushed her against a wall, causing her to fall, and when she stumbled, he allegedly threw her onto a bed. The complaint further alleges that during this time, Jay-Z stripped her and held her down while he raped her, with Combs and another unnamed female celebrity observing. After Jay-Z finished, the complaint states that Combs raped her as well.
Jane Doe is seeking unspecified damages. Her attorney, Tony Buzbee, has stated that he represents more than 100 individuals who have accused Combs of misconduct.
The amended complaint was submitted on December 8, naming Jay-Z, who responded to the allegations via a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), expressing concern for the impact of the “heinous” allegations on his family, which includes his children with wife Beyoncé.
“My only heartbreak is for my family,” Jay-Z stated, adding that he and his wife will need to explain the situation to their children, including their 12-year-old daughter Blue Ivy and 7-year-old twins, Rumi and Sir. He reflected on the loss of innocence this situation brings.
In a new filing, Jay-Z’s attorney, Alex Spiro, requested that the court dismiss the case and reveal the accuser’s identity. Spiro argued that Mr. Carter deserves to know who is accusing him of serious criminal acts while seeking significant financial compensation, claiming the allegations are orchestrated for publicity.
Spiro accused the unnamed plaintiff and her attorney of trying to suppress fair defense efforts after the defendant refused to pay.
Attorneys for Combs have also denied the claims made in the lawsuit, labeling it as part of a series of publicity stunts aimed at extorting money from well-known figures. They expressed confidence in the judicial process, stating, “In court, the truth will prevail: that Mr. Combs never sexually assaulted or trafficked anyone — man or woman, adult or minor.”
Combs has been detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since his arrest in September on federal charges including sex trafficking, racketeering, and transporting individuals for prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty and has been denied bail multiple times.
An indictment against Combs involves alleged “freak offs,” described as elaborate sexual performances involving coerced participation by female victims and male sex workers. His trial is anticipated to commence in May 2025.
