Ecuadorian footballer Marco Angulo, aged 22, has tragically passed away, a month after suffering severe injuries in a car accident. His club, LDU Quito, announced his death, expressing their sorrow at the loss of the talented midfielder, who had been hospitalized since the accident on October 7 in Quito, Ecuador.
Angulo, on loan from Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati, had undergone multiple surgeries and spent over a week in intensive care. “With deep sorrow and sadness, we regret to have to inform you of the death of our dear player Marco Angulo,” read a statement from LDU Quito on Tuesday. “His passing is an irreparable loss which will leave an indelible mark in our hearts.”
Angulo joined LDU Quito on loan in March 2024 after a season in the United States and had made 16 appearances for the Ecuadorian club, with his final game played just one day before the tragic accident. FC Cincinnati also shared their heartbreak over the news, saying they were “heartbroken to share” his passing.
The young player debuted for Ecuador’s national team in November 2022 and earned three caps, with the Ecuadorian Football Association paying tribute to his talent and camaraderie. “Marco was not only an outstanding player but also a great teammate,” the association’s statement read. “Rest in peace, Angulito.”
Reports in Ecuador indicate that Roberto Cabezas of Independiente del Valle and a friend, Victor Carcopa, were also killed in the accident. The condition of two other passengers remains unknown.
