The Edo State Government, under Governor Monday Okpebholo, has challenged the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to bring former Governor Godwin Obaseki to walk freely in the state, promising to pay ₦50 million for the exercise.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) made the daring statement during a press briefing in Benin City on Thursday. Kassim Afegbua, a party chieftain and member of the Edo State Assets Verification Committee, issued the challenge shortly after the committee’s inauguration by Governor Okpebholo.
Afegbua claimed that Obaseki’s administration “mismanaged” the state, leaving the former governor unable to walk among the people without facing backlash.
Responding to criticisms from the PDP about the Okpebholo administration’s recent actions, Afegbua emphasized that the new government’s people-focused policies have garnered widespread support in its first two weeks.
He accused the PDP and Obaseki of orchestrating attacks on the APC to distract from the challenges inherited from the previous administration. However, he maintained that the new government would not lose focus on its objectives.
“The steps and policy decisions we’ve taken so far have endeared us to Edo people. If the opposition is serious, they should invite ex-Governor Obaseki for a street walk. We are willing to pay him ₦50 million for the exercise and see how the people respond,” Afegbua declared.
He defended the government’s decision to set up an assets verification exercise, calling it a standard practice to provide an accurate status report of a predecessor’s administration.
Afegbua concluded by reiterating the Okpebholo administration’s commitment to credible governance and delivering impactful projects under the APC’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
