Eguavoen Denies Resigning as Super Eagles Coach, Confirms He’s Still in Charge
Austin Eguavoen, the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has dismissed rumors that he has stepped down as the interim coach of the Super Eagles. Eguavoen confirmed that he is still leading the team after recent speculation suggested he had resigned following two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Eguavoen was appointed by the NFF to coach the Super Eagles for the AFCON 2025 qualifying matches against the Benin Republic and Rwanda. This came after the federation failed to secure German coach Bruno Labbadia due to complications with German tax laws.
Eguavoen led Nigeria to a 3-0 victory over the Benin Republic in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. However, the team was held to a goalless draw in the second match against Rwanda in Kigali. Following the Rwanda match, rumors surfaced that Eguavoen had resigned from his role as interim coach.
On his return to Nigeria, Eguavoen addressed the rumors in a media chat at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. He clarified that he never resigned and is still in charge of the team.
“It’s unfortunate that false stories are being spread. I only mentioned that I would sit down with the NFF after the two games to discuss the next steps for the upcoming qualifiers,” Eguavoen said.
He emphasized that his position as the NFF’s Technical Director remains intact, and he is still responsible for managing the Super Eagles in their next AFCON qualifying games against Libya.
The Super Eagles will face Libya in a double-header next month, and Eguavoen confirmed that preparations will continue under his leadership as he remains committed to guiding the team through the qualification campaign.
