Elon Musk’s interest in acquiring Liverpool Football Club appears to have been confirmed by his father, Errol Musk. When asked about his son’s possible purchase of the Premier League team, Errol responded cautiously, saying, “I can’t comment on that, as it could drive the price up.” However, he did acknowledge that Elon had expressed a desire to buy the club, adding, “He would like to, of course. Who wouldn’t? I would too.”
Errol further elaborated during an interview with Times Radio, highlighting the family’s connection to Liverpool. “His grandmother was born there, and we have family in the city,” he said. “We were also fortunate to know several of The Beatles, as they were close to my family.” He concluded, “So, we have strong ties to Liverpool.”
The Musk family’s bond with the city goes back through Elon’s paternal grandmother, Cora Robinson, who was born in Mossley Hill in 1923 before moving to South Africa, where she married Walter Musk in 1944.
Elon Musk, who visited Liverpool as a child, once made headlines during a trip when, at the age of six, he wandered off from a playground in Wirral, sparking a police search. He was later found 10 miles from the location where he had been last seen. Musk’s childhood visits included experiences like picking strawberries in the area’s fruit fields and attending Wimbledon matches.
A potential purchase of Liverpool would involve a significant investment, with Forbes estimating the club’s value at £4.2bn. This figure is well within Musk’s financial reach, as he is the world’s wealthiest individual, with a net worth of £339.3bn. This is far more than the £4.25bn that Todd Boehly’s group paid for Chelsea in 2022, which suggests that Liverpool’s valuation could exceed the sale price of Chelsea.
Musk’s considerable wealth comes from his leadership roles at SpaceX and Tesla, as well as his ownership of X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
Liverpool’s current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), have previously downplayed the idea of selling the club. In 2023, FSG principal owner John W. Henry told the Boston Sports Journal, “Are we selling LFC? No.” However, he did confirm that talks with potential investors were ongoing. “We are speaking with investors about LFC,” Henry said. “Will something happen? I believe so, but it won’t be a sale.”
Currently, Liverpool sits atop both the Premier League and their Champions League group under FSG’s stewardship. Any attempt by Musk to take over would need to navigate FSG’s hesitance to give up full control of the club.
