Alexander Isak extended his impressive goal-scoring streak, helping Newcastle come from behind to defeat Tottenham 2-1 on Saturday. The victory marked a sixth consecutive win in all competitions for Eddie Howe’s side and handed Spurs yet another home defeat under manager Ange Postecoglou.
Tottenham started the match brightly, taking the lead in the 3rd minute when Dominic Solanke capitalized on Pedro Porro’s in-swinging delivery to head the ball past Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
Newcastle quickly responded, leveling the score just two minutes later. Anthony Gordon fired a low shot past Spurs’ debutant goalkeeper Brandon Austin into the far corner, much to the delight of England manager Thomas Tuchel, who was in attendance.
Tottenham appealed for a handball against Joelinton in the build-up to Gordon’s goal, but the officials ruled the contact with Lucas Bergvall’s pass was accidental and that Joelinton’s arm was in a natural position.
As the match progressed, Isak came close to scoring after a Jacob Murphy cross, but his shot went wide. However, the Swedish striker didn’t miss his second chance moments later, finishing coolly after Radu Dragusin deflected another Murphy cross into his path.
Isak’s goal made him the third Newcastle player to score in seven consecutive Premier League matches, following in the footsteps of Alan Shearer (1996) and Joe Willock (2021).
Tottenham showed signs of improvement in the second half. They came close to equalizing in the 55th minute when Brennan Johnson’s shot from a tight angle hit the woodwork after Pape Sarr’s earlier effort was saved by Dubravka.
Substitute James Maddison also went close with a curling shot just wide of the far post, while Sergio Reguilon fired off target late in the match. Despite these efforts, Spurs could not find an equalizer, as Postecoglou’s side slumped to a disappointing fifth home league defeat of the season.
