Mikel Arteta has emphasized the need for Arsenal to “flip that coin” as they strive to catch Premier League leaders Liverpool in their bid to claim the English championship. The Gunners, currently second, are six points behind an in-form Liverpool side led by Arne Slot, who also have a game in hand and have played half their league fixtures.
After back-to-back seasons as runners-up to Manchester City, Arsenal’s quest for their first Premier League title since 2004 has been hindered by a string of setbacks in October and early November. Speaking on Friday, Arteta called for his team to deliver greater consistency as they prepare for Saturday’s clash against mid-table Brighton.
“We need to show the same consistency—if not more—because over the last year, we’ve been the best team in the league, breaking several records but still missing out on a major trophy,” Arteta said. “It’s about fine margins and small details. We’ve been so close, but we need to turn those near-misses into wins.”
He added, “What we can control is our focus and effort. The rest is out of our hands.”
Arsenal’s pursuit has been further complicated by the absence of star winger Bukayo Saka, who is sidelined until March due to a hamstring injury sustained against Crystal Palace last month.
“It’s impossible for one player to cover nine consecutive games in that position,” Arteta explained. “We need more attacking options, players returning to fitness, and effective rotation in the squad. Decisions will be based on that, as well as individual performances.”
Regarding potential reinforcements during the January transfer window, Arteta remained non-committal.
“The focus is on the players we currently have,” he said. “If there’s an opportunity in the market that aligns with our needs and budget, we’ll consider it. But for now, it’s about maximizing the squad we already possess.”
With Liverpool maintaining their stronghold on the top spot, Arsenal will need to overcome their challenges and regain momentum to stay in contention for the title.
