Equatorial Guinea clinched their place in the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after holding Group E leaders Algeria to a 0-0 draw on Thursday in a tense qualifying match at Nuevo Estadio de Malabo.
The stalemate confirmed Equatorial Guinea’s second-place finish in Group E, securing their third consecutive AFCON appearance. With 8 points, they remain beyond the reach of third-placed Liberia, who sit on 4 points with only one match left.
Algeria, already assured of their qualification, retain the top spot in the group with 13 points. The Desert Foxes, led by Riyad Mahrez, created several scoring opportunities, with Mohammed Amoura and Ramiz Zerrouki posing threats. However, Equatorial Guinea’s defense, anchored by Basilio Ndong and Marvin Anieboh, managed to neutralize the Algerian attack.
Equatorial Guinea also had their chances, as Pedro Obiang and LuÃs Asué tested the Algerian defense, though they could not find a breakthrough. Both teams made substitutions to keep up the intensity, yet neither side could find the winning goal.
With this result, Algeria and Equatorial Guinea head to Morocco for the 2025 AFCON, while Liberia and Togo remain out of contention for qualification.
