Istanbul, Turkey – Ahead of the Europa League encounter with Fenerbahce, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag expressed excitement about facing off against former United boss Jose Mourinho. Mourinho, who took over at Fenerbahce in June after leaving Roma, has a reputation as one of football’s most accomplished managers.

Ten Hag praised Mourinho as “an example for many, many managers,” acknowledging his impressive track record, which includes winning both the League Cup and the Europa League during his time at United from 2016 to 2018.

United is under pressure after drawing their first two matches in this season’s Europa League, and Ten Hag is aware of the significance of this match. “It’s a big game for both of us,” he remarked at the Football Writers’ Association Northern Managers Awards dinner. He emphasized the importance of the match and his admiration for Mourinho’s winning mentality.

Despite guiding United to an FA Cup victory last season, Ten Hag’s position has come under scrutiny due to a poor start in the Premier League, with the team currently sitting 11th after just three wins from eight matches. Acknowledging the pressure that comes with the job, Ten Hag stated, “It is football; you have to live for now. The past is behind you, and you must prove yourself every day.”

Fortunately for Ten Hag, some pressure lifted after United’s recent 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford, where Rasmus Hojlund netted the decisive goal. Hojlund, who has faced injury setbacks, scored his first Premier League goal since May. Ten Hag remains confident in the young Danish striker’s abilities. “He will always score,” he said, highlighting the importance of Hojlund maintaining his fitness to ensure continued success on the pitch.

Looking ahead, Ten Hag reiterated the team’s goal to reclaim a trophy this season, as they prepare for their crucial encounter against Fenerbahce.
