Former France international Raphael Varane has been appointed as a board member at Como, the Serie A club announced on Saturday. This new role comes just a month after Varane, 31, retired from professional football due to a knee injury suffered in August.
Varane will be focusing on youth development, education, and product innovation within the club. His role will involve integrating academic, leadership, and vocational training into youth programs, helping young athletes prepare for life beyond football, according to a statement from the club.
Varane retired from international football last year after earning 93 caps for France, with his most notable achievement being a World Cup win in 2018. He ended his club career in September 2024 after being left out of Como’s squad due to injury. He had signed a two-year contract with the club, with an option for an additional year, just a few weeks prior to his retirement.
Reflecting on his new position, Varane expressed his commitment to Como, stating that he would remain with the club, though now in a non-playing capacity. His new role allows him to continue contributing to the sport without the demands of playing.
Varane’s stellar career includes winning an FA Cup and EFL Cup with Manchester United, where he played for three seasons. However, his most decorated period was with Real Madrid, where he won three La Liga titles, four Champions League trophies, and multiple Club World Cup titles during his decade-long stay at the Spanish giants.
