Matthias Schmale, the former United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, shared that the UN raised and allocated $1.5 billion (around N2.48 trillion) to support North-East Nigeria during his two-year tenure. This funding was crucial in assisting millions displaced by Boko Haram insurgents, providing essential services such as food, shelter, non-food items, and protection.

Schmale, who now serves as the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, highlighted the need for greater regional cooperation between the Lake Chad countries to effectively address the insurgency’s impact, which affects the broader region.

In an interview with Daily Sun, during the “Summit on Food Security – Grain from Ukraine” in Kyiv, Schmale reflected on his experience in Nigeria (2022-2023), commending the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of Nigerians despite the ongoing challenges of poverty and the Boko Haram crisis.

The UN had launched a humanitarian response plan for North-East Nigeria, initially seeking $1 billion in 2021 to support 6.4 million vulnerable people. This plan focused on providing critical services such as food, healthcare, shelter, and protection to those affected by the prolonged conflict.

Speaking fondly of his time in Nigeria, Schmale stated, “Despite the daunting challenges, such as over 130 million Nigerians living in multidimensional poverty and the persistent Boko Haram insurgency, I was continually inspired by the determination and entrepreneurial energy of the people to improve their circumstances.”

He added, “I learned immensely from my time in Nigeria, including from government officials and people from all walks of life, and I will always be grateful for the experience.”

Reflecting on the ongoing crisis in the North-East, Schmale noted that the civilian population continues to bear the brunt of Boko Haram’s violence. He also expressed deep admiration for the efforts of state authorities, the UN, and various NGOs in providing support under challenging conditions.

He went on to confirm, “During my two years in Nigeria, we raised and spent over $1.5 billion (N2.48 trillion), reaching millions with essential humanitarian aid.”

Regarding regional cooperation in tackling the insurgency affecting the Lake Chad Basin, Schmale stressed, “It’s clear that the insurgency impacts all countries around Lake Chad, and regional collaboration is key to overcoming it. The UN continues to engage with all countries in the region to help improve the quality of life for those living in the area.”
