Tensions are high in Rivers State after suspected arsonists reportedly detonated explosives at the All Progressives Congress (APC) state secretariat early on Saturday.

The incident occurred just hours before the scheduled local government elections in the state, which are set for today, October 5. The APC is the primary opposition party in Rivers State.

The attack took place at the APC secretariat in Port Harcourt. Reports from Leadership indicate that the explosion, believed to involve dynamite, caused damage to the main gate, the security post, and part of a nearby building.

Chief Tony Okocha, chairman of the APC caretaker committee, claimed that the attack was orchestrated by supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. In a statement to journalists, Okocha said, “In the early hours of Saturday, pro-Fubara civilian soldiers detonated dynamite at our office. A second attempt to set the building on fire was thwarted by security personnel who quickly extinguished the flames.”

The APC had previously announced its decision to boycott today’s local government elections across the state. In a surprising move, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Hon. Chukwuemeka Aaron, also declared its intention not to participate in the election.
