The family of Jimoh Abdulquadri has accused the Nigeria Police Force of torturing him to death while in custody, dismissing the official claim that he died by suicide.
Abdulquadri, who was arrested in Kwara State over a debt of ₦220,000, was reportedly beaten to death shortly after his detention.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement released on Sunday by its spokesperson, Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, stating that an investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
Allegations of Torture
Speaking to reporters in a video shared on TikTok, Abdulquadri’s mother claimed her son was killed to silence him. She alleged he may have possessed sensitive information that the police sought to suppress.
“They killed my son unjustly. He was neither a criminal nor a troublemaker. The arrest and his death over a ₦220,000 debt shocked us. He provided for me, and now I’ve lost him,” she lamented.
She further noted that the family had started gathering money to resolve the matter but was shocked to learn that Abdulquadri had died less than 20 minutes after being taken into custody.
Evidence Suggests Foul Play
Abdulquadri’s brother, Jimoh Ismail, detailed evidence pointing to foul play, including bloodstains at the police station and visible injuries on Abdulquadri’s body.
“A deputy commissioner claimed my brother used his torn clothing to strangle himself while kneeling, but that explanation is absurd,” Ismail stated.
He added, “When we examined his corpse, we saw bruises and a broken nose—clear signs of severe torture. The cell ceiling was too low for hanging, making the police’s suicide claim impossible. It’s evident that he was beaten to death.”
The family continues to demand justice, urging authorities to hold those responsible accountable and to ensure transparency in the ongoing investigation.
