Former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has praised Governor Biodun Oyebanji as a commendable successor, highlighting his impressive performance and ability to unite political leaders with varying interests in the state.
In a statement released on Monday, obtained by PULSE LENS Online, Fayemi noted that not all leaders possess the skills and creativity needed to achieve such unity in just two years of governance.
Fayemi made these remarks in Ado Ekiti on Sunday while commissioning two road projects: the Agric Olope-Odo Ado-Moferere road and the GRA 3rd extension road (phase one). These projects were initiated during his administration but completed under Oyebanji’s leadership.
He commended Oyebanji for adhering to the Ekiti State Transition Law, which prevents incoming administrations from abandoning projects initiated by their predecessors, calling this practice a hallmark of outstanding leadership.
“I am impressed by how you have been able to unite the political leaders of Ekiti State. Not all leaders are gifted with such abilities; not all of us have that talent. This is beneficial for the system, as we need peace and unity to foster development,” Fayemi stated.
He urged Oyebanji to maintain his excellent track record in delivering democratic benefits to the citizens of Ekiti and expressed support for the growing endorsements for Oyebanji’s second term from various groups and individuals.
“I take pride in Governor Oyebanji. He is a compassionate and gentle leader. All the road projects we initiated, like Itapa-Omu-Ijelu, GRA third extension, and Ado-Ifaki, are being addressed by his administration. We are thankful that continuity has proven beneficial for us in Ekiti.
“We had a challenging experience in the past. When I left in 2014, many unfinished road projects were left behind. We revisited these issues when I returned in 2018, which is why I campaigned on the continuity mantra we are now reaping the rewards from.
“I am pleased that the governor is committed to paying the minimum wage and ensuring the timely payment of salaries, pensions, and gratuities for retirees. This is a sign of good leadership focused on building for future generations.
“Most notably, the governor maintained the original contractors for these projects. Those who started them have successfully completed their work, and if they had not done so well, their contracts would have been revoked. This is truly the hallmark of effective leadership,” Fayemi added.
In response, Oyebanji acknowledged Fayemi’s efforts in laying a solid foundation for his administration, highlighting the projects that pave the way for the state’s economic prosperity as he neared the end of his term.
“Governor Kayode Fayemi, you are an excellent mentor and coach. You laid the groundwork effectively. You awarded these road projects just before leaving office. You worked hard and won the election for me, enabling me to carry on these projects.
“When I assumed office, I committed to completing the initiatives started by my predecessor before launching my own. As Governor Fayemi often says, all these projects belong to Ekiti, so we must protect them,” Oyebanji remarked.
State Commissioner for Works Mr. Sola Adebayo emphasized the significance of the newly commissioned roads, stating that they connect major suburban areas of the capital and will enhance transportation while opening new opportunities for farmers, traders, and commuters.
Adebayo also mentioned that Oyebanji is dedicated to building a network of roads that will expand economic activities, generate employment, and facilitate emergency services for health institutions.
On behalf of the benefiting communities, Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere Bello, President of the League of Imams and Alfas for the Southwest, Edo, and Delta States, commended the governor for prioritizing the road project, which now features modern markers and streetlights.
He expressed that the people of the area are committed to ensuring Oyebanji’s re-election so that the state can continue to benefit from his development initiatives.
