The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) reported a major fire outbreak late Sunday night that destroyed numerous shops and goods valued in the millions at a market near the Ajah area of Lagos State.
In a statement provided to the News Agency of Nigeria, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that the incident occurred at Ajah Market, located by Alesh bus stop in Lekki.
The emergency team, responding to distress calls through the toll-free lines 767 and 112, mobilized its response unit from the Lekki base around 9:30 PM. On reaching the scene at 10:10 PM, the team found that multiple shops containing flammable materials were already ablaze.
Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu noted that while the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, the emergency responders, alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, were able to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby buildings. Thankfully, no injuries or casualties were reported.
“Our teams managed not only the fire but also worked to control the large, anxious crowd gathered at the scene,” he said. “The fire has since been completely extinguished, and the operation has been concluded.”
