A fire outbreak on Wednesday evening severely damaged the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) office in Ikoyi, Lagos State, destroying major property, including three studios and office spaces.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed receiving an alert about the incident at around 5:30 p.m. Firefighters from Dolphin and Ebute Elefun stations, along with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), promptly responded to the scene.
According to LASEMA, the fire originated from an air conditioning unit in the building and quickly spread to adjoining areas, including the control rooms, music studio, and radio studio.
“Upon the arrival of the Shark Response Team at 6:33 p.m., the fire had engulfed sections of a two-storey and a one-storey building,” LASEMA stated. “Valuable properties were salvaged, but the fire caused significant damage to the roofs and several offices.”
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, speaking on behalf of LASEMA, confirmed that the combined efforts of the emergency responders helped contain the fire, preventing further destruction.
While no casualties have been reported, the extent of property loss is substantial, dealing a significant blow to the operations of the FRCN in Lagos. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the exact cause of the incident.
