Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has officially approved an increase in the minimum wage for state civil service employees to N85,000.
The decision was made during a closed-door meeting held at the Government House in Port Harcourt, attended by representatives from organized labor under the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council.
Nelson Chukwudi, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, announced the development in a statement on Friday.
Following the meeting, Dr. George Nwaeke, the Head of the Rivers State Civil Service, revealed that the new minimum wage will take effect starting November 2024. He noted, “Governor Fubara has approved the amount of N85,000, which exceeds the national minimum wage.”
When asked about the potential for back pay, Nwaeke indicated that this matter is still under consideration. A technical committee has been established to formulate a payment plan that addresses any outstanding arrears.
He explained, “The technical committee, of which I will serve as the Deputy to the Secretary to the State Government, will work on the specifics of the payment and will provide updates to the press in due course.”
Emecheta Chuku, the Rivers State Chairman of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, praised Governor Fubara for setting a minimum wage that surpasses the federal government’s standard.
