A gunman was fatally shot, and three police officers were injured in a shooting incident near the Israeli Embassy in the Rabiah neighborhood of Amman, Jordan, on Sunday.
According to Jordanian public security officials, the gunman opened fire on a police patrol in the vicinity of the heavily guarded embassy. The police swiftly responded, neutralizing the assailant at the scene.
Authorities have yet to determine the motive behind the attack and have launched an investigation.
The area surrounding the embassy was quickly cordoned off, with a significant security presence observed. Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunfire and seeing ambulances and police vehicles arriving at the scene.
Reports from Reuters indicate that the embassy’s surroundings have often been the site of anti-Israel demonstrations. Recent tensions have been heightened by the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has fueled widespread protests across Jordan.
A security source disclosed that residents were advised to stay indoors while security forces conducted further operations in the area.
Jordan, home to a significant Palestinian population—many of whom were displaced or fled during the 1948 conflict that led to Israel’s establishment—has a peace treaty with Israel. However, the treaty remains unpopular among many Jordanians, who view normalized relations as undermining Palestinian rights.
