Suspected cultists launched a deadly attack on the Edeoha community in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, resulting in the deaths of four residents early Sunday morning.
The attackers, believed to be members of the Iceland cult group, reportedly stormed the community at around 2 am, heavily armed and firing indiscriminately. Witnesses say the gunmen moved from house to house in search of specific targets, causing residents to flee in fear of being caught in the crossfire.
A local source, who requested anonymity, stated that the motive behind the assault remains unclear. “The whole community was thrown into chaos when they arrived and began shooting. Three of the victims were natives of Edeoha, while the fourth was from the Ekata community, though he lived in Edeoha,” the source explained.
The attackers are believed to have come from a camp in a neighboring area, targeting the four individuals, who were not believed to be involved in cult activities. The source speculated that the killings might have been carried out by cult members who were hired for reasons yet to be determined.
Edeoha is accessible by road from the Nbaima-Ahoada highway and is surrounded by creeks and rivers, which are sometimes exploited by criminals.
Confirming the incident, Rivers State Police Command spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko said the attack was cult-related. “Yes, I can confirm the incident. It is cult-related,” she said, adding that Police Commissioner Mohammed Mustapha has ordered a thorough investigation to apprehend those responsible and bring them to justice.
