At least seven people were killed on Monday when gunmen launched an attack on security operatives and unarmed civilians in the Ihiala area of Anambra State, according to the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.
In a statement released in Awka, the state capital, Ikenga confirmed that the assailants struck around 11:20 a.m., resulting in the deaths of five security personnel and two unarmed passers-by.
“The unfortunate attack resulted in the death of seven persons, including two unarmed civilians,” Ikenga said. He added that the Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered an immediate manhunt for the attackers.
Ikenga revealed that one victim was rescued and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
Eyewitness accounts shared with the police indicated that the gunmen began shooting sporadically at a venue preparing for a burial ceremony scheduled for January 2, 2025. While escaping, they also opened fire on security operatives stationed near the Local Government headquarters along the Express Road.
During an on-the-spot assessment of the scene, CP Itam extended condolences to the families of the victims and vowed to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
“The CP assures the public that the perpetrators of this heinous crime will be hunted down,” Ikenga concluded.
