On Friday, the Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps (NAOC) in Lagos honored five retired major generals during a formal pull-out ceremony held at its headquarters in Abalti Barracks, Surulere. The event, covered by the News Agency of Nigeria, allowed the retiring generals to reflect on their careers and experiences.
Major General Omotomilola Akintade, serving as the Reviewing Officer, spoke on behalf of the retiring officers, acknowledging the complex journey through service, filled with both challenges and triumphs, times of conflict, and moments of peace. Reflecting on his early days, he noted that many of these experiences were unforeseen during their initial training at the Nigerian Defence Academy.
Akintade expressed pride in representing his colleagues on this memorable occasion, marking their official departure from active duty within the Nigerian Army and the Armed Forces at large. He said they were honored to be given a valedictory parade as they bid farewell to military service.
Recalling their start in the Nigerian Army 34 years ago, Akintade said, “It’s nostalgic to think back to when we arrived here as young, energetic officers straight from the Nigerian Defence Academy. Serving in the NAOC has been a privilege, nurturing us from novices into skilled professionals and leaders.” He emphasized the enduring bond they share with the Ordnance Corps, where they feel part of “One Big Family.”
Akintade attributed their professional success to resilience, faith, and determination. “Today is one of deep sentiment, gratitude, and contentment,” he shared. The generals are retiring at a time when Nigeria faces multiple challenges, with the Armed Forces playing a crucial role in maintaining security.
He advised current personnel to maintain loyalty, professionalism, and dedication, reminding them of their Oath of Allegiance to protect Nigeria’s sovereignty and integrity. “You must stay committed to serving the nation without bias or political involvement,” he urged.
Expressing gratitude to the Nigerian Army, Akintade thanked the current Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, and his predecessors for their dedication to building a capable Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps. He voiced confidence in the corps’ continued valuable support to the Nigerian Army in both peace and wartime.
