The Imo State Police Command has apprehended Mr. Chinonso Uba, also known as Nonsonkwa, following a complaint from an anonymous citizen.
The petition cited viral videos in which Uba is accused of cyberstalking, defamation, spreading false information, and making provocative statements regarding the fire at the National Open University (NOUN) Study Centre in Nsu, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area, which occurred on September 30, 2024. Authorities allege that his comments incited civil unrest.
In a statement released on Monday, police spokesperson Henry Okoye clarified that Uba was not abducted. He is currently held at the State Headquarters and will be charged in court once a thorough investigation concludes.
“The Command is dedicated to upholding the rule of law and ensuring peace and order in the state, emphasizing that anyone connected to the tragic incident involving the NOUN study centre will face legal consequences,” the statement read.
Chinonso Uba had previously questioned a report aired by TVC regarding the use of Imo State as a camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) instead of addressing the insecurity issues in Ehime Mbano, where the NOUN study centre is located.
Reports indicate that suspected arsonists destroyed the NOUN study centre in early October, along with the home of former lawmaker Senator Frank Ibezim.
“This unfortunate incident highlights a troubling trend of violence that jeopardizes the safety and security of our communities. The Command firmly opposes such actions and will collaborate with other security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice,” the statement emphasized.
The attacks reportedly followed a viral video suggesting that the Federal Government intended to convert the NOUN facility into a training ground for IDPs. The state government has since denied these claims.
The video came after a visit from Tijani Mohammed, the Federal Commissioner for the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, to the training facility located within the NOUN study centre.
