Insecurity: FG Orders Minister, Defence Chiefs to Relocate to Sokoto
The Federal Government has instructed the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, along with senior military leaders, to relocate to Sokoto State as part of efforts to combat the escalating issues of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism in the North-West.
This directive was communicated through a statement by Mr. Henshaw Ogubike, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence.
According to the government, this move is a key component of its intensified strategy to eliminate the threats of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism in the region.
The Federal Government expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence perpetrated by terrorists and bandits in the region, highlighting that this strategic decision reflects its strong commitment to restoring peace and security in the affected areas.
Dr. Matawalle stated that while stationed in the North-West, he and the military leadership would oversee operations aimed at dismantling the criminal network led by Bello Turji and his gang.
He cited a recent incident where bandits filmed a Nigerian military armored vehicle stuck in a waterlogged area in Kwashabawa, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara. The video, which was circulated online, showed the bandits celebrating the incident after Nigerian forces were forced to withdraw to avoid an ambush.
Dr. Matawalle emphasized that this situation is unacceptable, particularly in light of the substantial support provided by President Bola Tinubu to the Nigerian Armed Forces.
He reiterated the Federal Government’s deep concern over the persistent security challenges in the North-West and affirmed its determination to deploy all necessary resources to eradicate these criminal elements and restore peace.
“The time is up for these bandits and terrorists, as our intensified and continuous operations will weaken their strongholds,” Matawalle declared, expressing confidence that his presence in the region would boost the morale of the armed forces.
He further assured residents of Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, and the entire North-West that security forces would make every effort to eradicate the bandits.
“I will be on the ground in the North-West, alongside the Chief of Defence Staff and other military leaders, leading our courageous men and women in uniform,” he added.
Dr. Matawalle also urged the local population to stay vigilant and cooperate with security forces, assuring them that the Federal Government remains committed to safeguarding the lives and property of all Nigerians, with their security and well-being being a top priority.(NAN)
