The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has urged residents in the South-East region to disregard a purported sit-at-home order scheduled for October 21 and 22, clarifying that this directive did not originate from the group.

For over two weeks, a video and voice messages circulating on social media warned people in the South-East to stay indoors on these dates, claiming a sit-at-home order had been declared. The messages also included threats against those who did not comply, causing significant panic and disruption, particularly in Anambra State, where various official and non-official activities were rescheduled.

For instance, sources reported that court cases set for those days were postponed to prevent potential violence from hoodlums targeting vehicles transporting suspects from prisons. There was also noticeable panic buying in major markets as residents rushed to make purchases to avoid being stranded.

In schools, notices were displayed informing parents and students about the suspension of activities due to the circulating threats. One such announcement read, “Based on the circulating threats from IPOB, there will be no school on Monday and Tuesday, 21st and 22nd October 2024. This is strictly for security reasons.”

However, in response to the situation, IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, emphasized that the group had not declared any sit-at-home order for those dates. He described the announcement as an “illegal” directive from criminal elements and infiltrators, insisting that the community should continue with their daily activities.

“We did not declare any sit-at-home order on October 21 and 22. The illegal order is from criminal elements and Finland-based infiltrators who are not our members,” Powerful stated in a phone interview. He urged the public to ignore the threats, asserting that IPOB does not support unnecessary sit-at-home orders and had already suspended such actions. He further emphasized that any such declaration should be disregarded, labeling those responsible as criminals.
