Following a U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, President Joe Biden announced plans to intensify efforts for a truce in Gaza. The president, whose term is nearing its end, stated on Wednesday that the administration would collaborate with international partners to secure a ceasefire that includes the release of hostages and the removal of Hamas from power.

The truce between Israel and Hezbollah, facilitated by the U.S. and France, took effect on Wednesday, showing signs of stability despite reports of a possible violation. Lebanese media cited an incident where journalists were allegedly fired upon near Khiam, leaving two individuals with minor injuries. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) did not confirm the claim but reported an unrelated encounter with suspects in southern Lebanon.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalated after the October 2023 Hamas attack, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths and numerous hostages in Israel. The subsequent cross-border violence has claimed thousands of lives, with Lebanese officials reporting nearly 3,800 fatalities by the time the ceasefire began.

While the Lebanon ceasefire proceeds, Gaza remains a critical focus. Health officials in the territory report over 44,000 deaths and massive displacement due to ongoing Israeli military operations. Biden emphasized the need for peace in Gaza, noting the immense suffering endured by its residents.

Hamas expressed openness to ceasefire talks, signaling readiness to negotiate through mediators in Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey. Efforts to facilitate a Gaza truce gained momentum with Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi meeting Qatari officials to discuss humanitarian aid and prisoner exchanges. Jordan’s King Abdullah II also joined discussions in Cairo.

The Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire mandates Israeli troops to withdraw from southern Lebanon within 60 days, with Hezbollah moving its forces 20 miles north of the border. Despite these arrangements, distrust persists on both sides. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of military action if Hezbollah rearms or violates the agreement.

As negotiations for Gaza continue, displaced civilians in both Lebanon and Gaza hope for a chance to rebuild their lives. Meanwhile, the families of Israeli hostages await news of their loved ones amid efforts to end the violence.
