Jigawa Tanker Explosion Claims 105 Lives, 55 Injured
A devastating petrol tanker explosion in Majiya town, located in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has resulted in the deaths of at least 105 people, with 55 others sustaining injuries.
The spokesperson for the state’s police command, Shiisu Adam, confirmed the death toll during a phone interview on Wednesday. He noted that those injured are receiving treatment at Ringim General Hospital.
“As of now, the death toll has risen to 105, and the number of injured stands at 55, up from the initial figure of 50,” Adam reported.
The tragic incident occurred around 11:30 pm on Tuesday when the tanker, en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, lost control near Khadija University in Majia Town and exploded.
Reports indicate that after the tanker overturned, some individuals attempted to collect the spilled fuel, leading to the high number of fatalities. Due to the limited capacity at Ringim General Hospital, some of the injured have been transferred to Federal Medical Centre Birnin Kudu for further care.
Authorities are now preparing for a mass burial, as many of the victims were burned beyond recognition.
