John Mahama has officially been sworn in as Ghana’s president during a ceremony held at Independence Square in Accra, the country’s capital. The event, which took place on Tuesday, was attended by several world leaders.
Mahama succeeds Nana Akufo-Addo, who took office in 2017 after defeating him. Returning to the presidency after seven years, Mahama is tasked with reviving Ghana’s struggling economy.
In a historic moment, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was also inaugurated as Ghana’s first female vice president.

The oath of office for both leaders was administered by Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo. The duo emerged victorious in the December election, marking Mahama’s comeback to the highest office.
